HAITI, December 28—Progressive Labor Party (PLP) here in Haiti is organizing for our annual “Soupe de Solidarité” on New Year’s Day. It is a celebration of the successful fight in Haiti against slavery and colonization by the French slave masters. Before Jan. 1, 1804, soupe joumou (pumpkin soup) was reserved only for the slave masters and their minions; afterwards, the former slaves relished their soup, not only for its tastiness but as a reminder of their fight for justice against racism and slavery.

U.S.-Israel target Gaza and journalists

Since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which killed 1200 mostly civilians and took more than 200 hostages, workers around the world have been focused on the massive, Nazi-like ethnic cleansing being carried out in Gaza by the Israeli fascists and their U.S. imperialist partners. Millions have taken to the streets to oppose this racist genocide that threatens to become a much wider war. As of December 29, about 22,000 Palestinians have been killed, hundreds of thousands injured and more than 1.5 million have been displaced, mostly children.

Solidarity, not silence— Multiracial unity exposes Zionist education bosses

MARYLAND, December 19, 2023—Tonight the fight against Zionist efforts to intimidate teachers who have supported Palestinian workers in Gaza took another step forward. The teachers have not been content to rely only on grievance procedures and lawyers but have continued to organize and speak up. Over 130 protestors gathered outside the Board of Education tonight in the cold to support the “Solidarity Not Silence” campaign. Parents, teachers, students, and community members vigorously chanted, “When teachers are under attack, what do we do, stand up, fight back!” and “Jewish, Arab, Black and white, workers of the world unite.” After several sharp speeches from teachers, members of the Progressive Labor Party (PLP), Jewish Voice For Peace, and Palestinian students, a group of about 50 marched over to the building where the closed meeting was being held and chanted and pounded on the windows. PLP members distributed nearly 50 CHALLENGEs with articles about this struggle and the fight at the American Public Health Association (CHALLENGE, 1/3).

Keep the ball rolling for sports integration

BROOKLYN, NY, January 2—The struggle continues two years after winning the fight to integrate two formerly separate sports programs on John Jay’s Campus–one with mostly white and Asian students and another of mostly Black and Brown students. Israeli-U.S. bombs destroy majority of Gazan homes Al Jazeera, 12/31/23–Israel’s relentless bombardment of Gaza for nearly three months has destroyed 70 percent of the homes in the besieged Palestinian enclave, according to the Government Media Office. About 300,000 out of 439,000 homes have been destroyed in Israeli attacks, a Wall Street Journal report said…“The word ‘Gaza’ is going to go down in history along with Dresden [Germany] and other famous cities that have been bombed,” Robert Pape, a political scientist at the University of Chicago… In nearly two months, the offensive has wreaked more destruction than the razing of Syria’s Aleppo between 2012 and 2016, Ukraine’s Mariupol, or, proportionally, the Allied bombing of Germany in World War II… “Gaza is one of the most intense civilian punishment campaigns in history,” said Pape.

Editorial: Taiwan, flashpoint of inter-imperialist rivalry

Imperialist war drums are beating loudly in the Pacific as the U.S. and China vie to control resources, markets, and geopolitical leverage. At the center of this grab bag is Taiwan, the island republic claimed by China-- and viewed by the U.S. as a strategic counterpoint to China’s rising power. In advance of Taiwan’s January 13 elections, the two superpowers are competing for regional supremacy as they move toward World War III. Their maneuvers lay bare their bloodthirsty drive for profit and also expose the lethal dangers of nationalism. Progressive Labor Party (PLP) stands firm that working people have no nations—and no side in the capitalist bosses’ dogfight. The bosses cloak their insatiable greed in nationalist rhetoric and calls for a false unity with “their” workers. But all alliances with capitalists offer workers only misery and death.

NJ: REBEL AGAINST LIBERAL FASCISM

WEST ORANGE, NJ, December 11—The attempted genocide by the Israeli government has sparked international outrage among workers around the world. New Jersey has been one of the sites where sharp struggles between antiracists and Zionists have been on display. Antiracist actions led by high school students and teachers have been a catalyst for students and workers to fight back in the area. The courage and multiracial unity of workers have also been met with nationalism and fear. The Progressive Labor Party (PLP) has been involved in such a struggle at the urging of one of the parents in town. We stand alongside these workers and struggle to win workers to see that capitalism is the main enemy that needs to be smashed.
